The only process that widened the barrier beyond the critical width was breaching, formation of a partially subaerial flood shoal, and subsequent inlet closure. The majority of the literature on the subject has favored the idea of drowned coastal ridges. The Mississippi River has built a series of deltas over time, resulting in overlapping lobes of deltaic sediment. If the downdrift barrier is short and the ebb-tidal delta fronts a large portion of the downdrift barrier, then bar complexes weld to the downdrift end of the barrier forming downdrift bulbous barriers.
